After numerous weeks of rain and washouts the Moreton Bay Super 6 Rugby Cup return to action on October 30th at Redcliffe Rugby Union Club. The usual suspects flexed their muscles after a 6 week holiday and it was evident that crucial top of the table spots were the order of the day. Tullawong had a convincing win over the boys from Southern Cross, Murrumba dealt with Clontarf with relative ease and the game of the Round Caboolture vs Deception Bay didn’t disappoint. The Caboolture side showed great heart and stuck it to the Deception Bay boys, who to date haven’t dropped a game. There was free flowing rugby and big hits from both sides, before injury to Caboolture’s playmaker opened the way for Deception Bay to run home clear winners in the end.
On the 6th of November, the Melbourne Cup wasn’t the only important sporting fixture being run. Round 5 of the Moreton Bay Super 6 Cup was scheduled in and a second spot finish was on the cards for three teams; Tullawong, Caboolture and Murrumba. Tullawong came up against the undefeated Deception Bay, a win would secure 2nd spot and book them a spot against the same opposition the following week. Caboolture and Murrumba took on Clontarf and Southern Cross respectively. A Tullawong loss and bonus point win would be enough for Caboolture. A Tullawong loss, bonus point win and Caboolture loss would see Murrumba through. Even a Caboolture win without a bonus point could prove enough to see Murrumba slide through on for and against.
There was an added bit of excitement around Kevin Kaeser Oval, QLD Reds head coach, Rugby and Sporting Legend Brad Thorn was on hand to talk to the players and watched the games. The level of rugby being played was spot on and Brad looked excited with what he saw. Deception Bay started in their usual strong way, the heat quickly caught up with them and momentum swung Tullawong’s way. Into the second half after a drink and a break, Deception Bay found their form again that has seen them undefeated throughout the tournament. They went on to win convincingly however Tullawong showed that with a few offloads and quick ball, Deception Bay are definitely beatable.
Caboolture and Murrumba chasing bonus points were going try for try across the two fields. Southern Cross, as they have done all tournament tried their hearts out. The usual errors and missed tackles cost them in the end and Murrumba ran away with the bonus point victory they required to have a look in for a finals berth. Caboolture had other ideas and locked in their spot as the 2nd placed team. They were too strong up the middle for Clontarf, who in the hot weather ran out of steam and gave the Caboolture side a bonus point win, which was enough to see them through.
The table ended;
